[CHARACTER DESIGN] An Unexpected Party

This project was an opportunity to explore three classic fantasy archetypes from a different angle. Instead of following the usual visual clichés, I tried to give each character its own identity by drawing inspiration from real historical clothing, armor, and craftsmanship.

The designs borrow elements from 14th-century European armor, medieval heraldry, Byzantine court fashion, Spanish majos, Brazilian cangaceiros, and historical scientific instruments like the astrolabe and the Antikythera mechanism. Every piece of clothing, accessory, heraldic symbol, and magical artifact started with historical research before being adapted into a fantasy setting.

One of the things I enjoy most about designing fantasy characters is treating history as a source of inspiration. I find that grounding fantastic ideas in real cultures and objects makes them feel richer and more believable while still leaving plenty of room for imagination.

The next step for this project is bringing the trio together in a full action illustration.
